How to get motivated with creative limitations

One of the most common issues artists have is that when you can do anything, you tend to do nothing.

By this I mean that if you have the freedom, ability and time to make whatever art you want with no deadline or expectations, we can quickly lose our motivation. Why make art if we have no purpose?

This is where limitation comes in.

Limitation can come in many forms and could include:

✨️ Scale – define a specific scale that you have to work towards like 10cmx10cm

✨️ Subject Matter – you can only draw pictures of buildings this week.

✨️ Time – you only have 10mins to do a drawing. Or you have to complete 5 artworks before the end of the week.

✨️ Theme – give yourself a theme that your work has to relate to, make it as specific as possible. For example, ‘Reflections’.

Essentially, having a limitation on your art is more challenging than having none, and if we are challenged we not only want to do it more, but we improve our art skills at the same time.

So give it a go today, introduce a limitation to your artwork and see what happens.

Happy art making!
