More Than a Masters: The Power of Creative Community

I had all the training in the world. From early art lessons to immersive studio practice, I worked my way through to a Master’s degree in London. Every lecture, critique, and assignment helped shape my skills and sharpen my eye.

But education alone didn’t make me the artist I am today.

The real magic came from the people who worked alongside me.

From classmates who discussed obscure theories, to tutors who challenged me to dig deeper (some might say tore me apart to build me up again!), and fellow artists who shared their process, doubts, and breakthroughs; community was my real driving force.

Over time, this creative community has shifted. Some connections faded, others evolved. New voices entered, bringing fresh perspectives. I’ve learned that creativity isn’t just nurtured in solitude (although sometimes this is just what I needed); it flourishes in collaboration and companionship.

So let me ask you: do you have a creative community to support you?

If not, maybe it’s time to begin building one. Whether it’s a local group, an online space, or a one-on-one mentorship, your art deserves connection.

And if you do have that support—cherish it. Because it’s often the unsung heroes around us who help shape the work we put into the world.
