Question: how do I get better at drawing people?
This is such a common question and something that most people (not just artists) want to get better at. As with most things, there is no silver bullet and practice makes perfect.
But there are things we can do to make things easier.
Answer: there’s an easy way to improve our drawing of people and that’s by working on our muscle memory.
We can do this by simply drawing around the edges of people we see in magazines. 📖
The more we get used to the shape, lines of the human body, the easy it is to replicate.
Note: this alone won’t make us amazing at drawing people but it will definitely help 😊👍💛 however, read on…
I remember being challenged by a student over my approach because they drew people in a particular stylised way that differed from the poses they could find in magazines.
But essentially, they had done the same thing; built up their muscle memory by drawing the same TYPE of body over and over again.
They were very good at what they did, but they found it hard to change their habits and draw more realistically.
So it’s important to remember that you don’t want to get too repetitive about drawing bodies in a particular or fashionable way and always make sure you’re practising good visual observation and measured drawing as well.
